{"id":856,"date":"2010-11-18T22:40:59","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T20:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/?p=856"},"modified":"2011-02-09T20:20:03","modified_gmt":"2011-02-09T18:20:03","slug":"stat-computing-visions-from-the-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/stat-computing-visions-from-the-past\/","title":{"rendered":"Stat Computing Visions from the Past"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently stumbled upon an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vr-web.de\/%7Emartin.theus\/JAVA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">old paper<\/a> of a presentation I gave at the Interface conference in 1998, entitled &#8220;JAVA &#8211; the next Generation of Statistical Computing?&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vr-web.de\/%7Emartin.theus\/JAVA.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Next Generation of Stat Computing (a '98 view)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/NextGenStatComp.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is very interesting to compare the things I envisioned 12 years ago and what actually came true. Here are some topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did Java change a whole lot (in statcomp)? No<\/li>\n<li>Did anybody had an idea that S-Plus would be flattened by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.r-project.org\" target=\"_blank\">R<\/a>? No, although &#8220;the 2 Rs&#8221; did announce the &#8220;going public&#8221; of R at the very same conference &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Did a package based system become a success in statcomp? Yes, with R and not with Java as I would have thought 12 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Do we have data in the &#8220;network&#8221;? Yes, but now we call it &#8220;the cloud&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Did Java help to get better interfaces for statistical tools? No, not really. Most of them are as bad as they used to be 12 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Do we do statistics &#8220;within the browser&#8221; by now? No, neither with applets nor with other technologies at hand today. Yes, there are things like <a href=\"http:\/\/www-958.ibm.com\/software\/data\/cognos\/manyeyes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Many Eyes<\/a>, but they can&#8217;t be used to actually analyze data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What did you think what statcomp would look in the future 12 years ago?
