{"id":849,"date":"2010-11-27T22:19:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-27T20:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/?p=849"},"modified":"2010-11-27T22:19:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-27T20:19:00","slug":"increased-internet-usage-and-social-isolation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/increased-internet-usage-and-social-isolation\/","title":{"rendered":"Off Topic(?)<br>Increased Internet Usage and Social Isolation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu\/~eroberts\/cs201\/projects\/personal-lives\/stanford.html\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/group\/siqss\">Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society (SIQSS)<\/a> has its 10th anniversary now as I stumbled over a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cesifo-group.de\/portal\/page\/portal\/ifoContent\/N\/pr\/pr-PDFs\/Schnelldienst2010PDF\/ifosd_2010_21_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> by the German <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cesifo-group.de\/portal\/page\/portal\/ifoHome\" target=\"_blank\">ifo-Institut<\/a>, looking into the same topic a decade later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"What does the internet do to us ..?\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/InternetDudes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>SIQSS study<\/strong> states:<br \/>\n&#8211; Internet isolates people<br \/>\n&#8211; Internet allows work to intrude into home<br \/>\n&#8211; Internet causes people to remain &#8220;home alone and anonymous&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The \u00a0<strong>ifo-study<\/strong> says:<br \/>\n&#8220;Web-Nutzung hat keinen negativen Einfluss auf sogenannte Face-to-Face-, also pers\u00f6nliche Sozialkontakte (au\u00dfer mit Verwandten: Web-Nutzer haben weniger Verwandtschafts-, aber mehr Bekanntschaftskontakte)&#8221;<br \/>\nUsing the web does not have a negative effect on so-called face-to-face, i.e., personal social contacts (except with relatives: web-user have less contacts with relatives, but more with acquaintances)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From a statistical point of view the studies are questionable anyways; the Stanford study does not reveal what was exactly done (beyond correlations\/associations), and the ifo-study shows loads of significant terms of a linear model of very questionable stability. The former are social scientists the latter economists.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow predefines the results. Social scientists will look critical on the changes the internet brings with it whereas economists must praise modernism fueling revenues that pays their salaries.<\/p>\n<p>My personal opinion (and observations) is closer to what the SIQSS study showed than to what the ifo-institue delivered. The studies are certainly based on different situations as the ifo-study looks into the internet world of Web 2.0 and the so called &#8220;social networks&#8221;, but nonetheless, while working &#8220;with&#8221; the internet, we do not really interact with humans &#8211; ask my kids &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The study by the Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society (SIQSS) has its 10th anniversary now as I stumbled over a new study by the German ifo-Institut, looking into the same topic a decade later.
