{"id":677,"date":"2010-08-01T13:55:47","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T11:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/?p=677"},"modified":"2010-08-01T15:42:17","modified_gmt":"2010-08-01T13:42:17","slug":"childhood-faith-vs-current-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/childhood-faith-vs-current-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"The Good &#038; the Bad [08\/2010]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last regular issue of &#8220;The Good &amp; the Bad&#8221; dates back to [11\/2006], so it is more than time to post.<\/p>\n<p>I found this <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/2010\/07\/the-crosshairs-of-religions.html\" target=\"_blank\">flowchart<\/a> on Kaiser&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/\" target=\"_blank\">junkchart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/Faith-Bad-o.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Faith Migrations\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/Faith-Bad.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe graph was originally posted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internetmonk.com\/archive\/michael-bell-looking-at-the-pew-forums-changes-in-religious-affliliation-data\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Monk<\/a>&#8216;s blog &#8211; the data comes from a study, which can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/pewforum.org\/newassets\/images\/reports\/flux\/fullreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. There was no data for this migration matrix posted in either of the blogs, so I reverse engineered the graphics (pixel by pixel) and created the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/FaithMigration.txt\">data table<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the migration matrix only has 36 potential values to depict (from which some don&#8217;t even exist), the flowchart is already tremendously cluttered. The general question, which group loses most is hard to see, and the many small migration paths obscure the graph&#8217;s message to some extend.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my suggestion which uses barcharts for source and destination distribution and a fluctuation diagram for the migrations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/Faith-Migration-o.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Faith Migration Matrix\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/Faith-Migration.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"566\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What can we read from the graphs? There is a general movement towards &#8220;None&#8221;, which is by far the biggest receiving group.\u00a0Both &#8220;Catholics&#8221; and &#8220;Evangelicals&#8221; lose substantially, but &#8220;Evangelicals&#8221; at least gains somewhat from other groups. &#8220;Evangelicals&#8221; and &#8220;Mainline Protestants&#8221; seem to be the biggest 2&#215;2 exchange. &#8220;Black Protestants&#8221; only lose to &#8220;None&#8221;, which also might just be a data error.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last regular issue of &#8220;The Good &amp; the Bad&#8221; dates back to [11\/2006], so it is more than time to post.
