{"id":650,"date":"2010-07-27T20:43:40","date_gmt":"2010-07-27T18:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/?p=650"},"modified":"2010-07-29T19:13:24","modified_gmt":"2010-07-29T17:13:24","slug":"telling-stories-with-graphics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/telling-stories-with-graphics\/","title":{"rendered":"Surprise Me!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was a bit puzzled when I read the lines in <a href=\"http:\/\/cs.uncc.edu\/~rkosara\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert&#8217;s<\/a> hint to the InfoVis Workshop called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thevcl.com\/storytelling\/\" target=\"_blank\">Telling Stories with Data<\/a>&#8220;, saying: &#8220;<em>If you haven&#8217;t watched the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/index.php\/talks\/hans_rosling_shows_the_best_stats_you_ve_ever_seen.html\"><em>Hans Rosling video<\/em><\/a><em> yet, you probably haven&#8217;t realized that visualization isn&#8217;t just there for data analysis, it&#8217;s also a great tool for telling stories.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly what I mentioned earlier in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/the-good-and-the-bad-chicken-and-egg-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">older post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A good visualization should <strong>tell us a story about the data<\/strong> you didn\u2019t know before and not the other way round, i.e., once you know the story, you create a visualization around it.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a nice proof of how this usually works:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Antony Unwin and Alan MacEachren talking about some data visualization\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/AntonyAndAlan.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosuda.org\/%7Eunwin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Antony<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geog.psu.edu\/people\/maceachren\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alan<\/a> talking about some visualization at the 2002 JSM in NYC<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If the result of your graphical analysis is not something you can put into a story, you probably didn&#8217;t really succeed with your analysis.
