{"id":344,"date":"2010-02-21T21:35:57","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T19:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/?p=344"},"modified":"2010-02-21T21:35:57","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T19:35:57","slug":"what-is-the-name-of-the-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/what-is-the-name-of-the-game\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the name of the game?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is from Daniel Keim&#8217;s &#8220;Call for Papers&#8221; for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurovast.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">EuroVAST 2010<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;Visual Analytics<\/em><\/strong><em> is the <\/em><strong><em>science<\/em><\/strong><em> of <\/em><strong><em>analytical reasoning<\/em><\/strong><em><br \/>\nsupported by<br \/>\n<\/em><strong><em> interactive visual interfaces<\/em><\/strong><em>,<br \/>\nwhich requires interdisciplinary science\u00a0integrating techniques from<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>visualization and computer graphics,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>statistics and mathematics,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>data management and knowledge representation,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>data analysis and machine learning,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>cognitive and\u00a0perceptual sciences,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>and more.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hmm, these are a lot of disciplines and my already vague understanding of what visual analytics might be, did not get any clearer. Computer science has always been good at creating new buzz words, which may generate money to fund new projects.<\/p>\n<p>But I think there is more to it than just the buzz. Above list of disciplines somehow shows that all these traditional disciplines may fall short when it comes to solve today&#8217;s data analytical problems. If we (as people who may influence the direction of the one or the other discipline) would have pursued the philosophy which John W.
