{"id":22,"date":"2006-11-14T21:30:50","date_gmt":"2006-11-14T19:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/statisticalgraphics.blog.com\/1254521\/"},"modified":"2012-09-09T21:26:47","modified_gmt":"2012-09-09T19:26:47","slug":"the-good-the-bad-112006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/the-good-the-bad-112006\/","title":{"rendered":"The Good &#038; the Bad [11\/2006]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time it is easy for me, as I just need to point to the interesting discussion at <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/2006\/11\/calming_the_rip.html\">Junk Charts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The original graphics is from the NYT:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/images\/nyt_auto.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe &#8220;improved&#8221; plot looks like this:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/redo_autoshares_1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"440\" src=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/redo_autoshares_1.png\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe advantages of the box-plot view (from Junkcharts)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The European market is much more fragmented than the U.S. market.<\/li>\n<li>The Big 2 (GM, Ford) has had mixed fortunes over this period (as indicated by the large variance)<\/li>\n<li>The Big 2 are competitive in Europe although they are definitely not dominant there<\/li>\n<li>Several key players in Europe (Peugeot, Renault, Fiat, BMW) have negligible shares in the U.S<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The discussion was quite lengthy, but had the two major points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boxplots are too hard to read for NYT readers<\/li>\n<li>The boxplots ignore the temporal information and thus are not really suitable for this data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One important point was not mentioned explicitly, which is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sorting is a very powerful and important option in graphics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is truth to all the issues raised here, and the bottom line is probably that there might be not a single graphical view on the data which covers all aspects of the data. Furthermore, the NYT graphics is by far the most eye-pleasing version of all suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>In this spirit I want to throw in two more versions which show the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosuda.org\/~theus\/Blog\/automarketshare.csv\">data<\/a>:<br \/>\nTwo variations of Mosaic Plots (will be explained in the next &#8216;statistical graphics 101&#8217;) in the multiple barchart view.
