Besides the timeless and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusrus.de\/blog\/great-movie-about-a-design-classics\/\" target=\"_blank\">universal design<\/a>, the chosen geographical distortion has always been a point of discussion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/beck_map.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Beck's Tube Map\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/beck_map_small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourthway.co.uk\/tfl.html\" target=\"_blank\">fourthway<\/a> [via <a href=\"http:\/\/infosthetics.com\/archives\/2011\/04\/the_real_london_underground.html\" target=\"_blank\">infosthetics<\/a>]\u00a0we find a nice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourthway.co.uk\/realunderground\/real_underground_small_750x525.html\" target=\"_blank\">animation<\/a> between the &#8220;real map&#8221;, which is geographically correct and the stylized map, which is optimized for reading and aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here are the two versions:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/tube-real.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"the &quot;real&quot; map of the London Tube\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/tube-real-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"398\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/tube-modern.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"the same part as above in abstracted form\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/tube-modern-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At first glance, the very nice animation might give us the impression that Beck&#8217;s creation is really of no help as the geographically correct map is still nicely readable and gives us so much more insight of where we actually are or go.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So did Beck err, and we are being fooled by strange subway maps around the world for no reason? Certainly not!<\/p>\n<p>The answer is quite simple. The clip the guys at fourthway use is a quite small part of London&#8217;s inner city. Thus the average distance between stations has a relatively small variance (and is small itself), and &#8211; as we see &#8211; it does not make much of a difference which version of the map we look at.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the current complete map and shading the chosen clip in it, shows how much of the subway network is not covered:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/standard-tube-map-rect.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The full tube map\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/standard-tube-map-rect-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"385\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am too lazy now to get the real distances fixed, but only looking at the fare zones (as a proxy for distance) shows us that the clip covers mainly only fare zone one, and almost any line extends to at least zone 4, some even as far as 9.<\/p>\n<p>The full story of a geographically correct London Tube map looks like this<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/b7\/London_Underground_full_map.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"the real full tube map\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theusRus.de\/Blog-files\/tube-full-real-map-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/London_Underground_geographic_maps\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia<\/a> along with some more detailed maps.<\/p>\n<p>Now it is very easy to understand why Mr. Beck really had a brilliant idea in choosing this particular design which was consequently adopted in subways around the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr. Beck&#8217;s London Tube map is a real design classic.
